I began creating bags in the summer of 2008 while vacationing on Prince Edward Island. Since then I have made and sold over 75 bags from a variety of fabrics including silk dupioni, recycled blue jeans, decorator fabrics and fabrics that I have created with paint, stencils and dyes.
This is an example of one of my Sweet Pea line of bags from recycled blue jeans. The fabric has been stenciled and sprayed with a color wash to to give it the varied coloring. Free motion stitching emphasizes the designs. Blue jeans bags have a strap braided from the same denim and the bag's lining material.
One of my favorite bags began with white cotton that was stenciled and dyed with a color wash and again stitched with free motion as well as decorative embroidery. The Sweet Pea line of bags are approximately 7" x 11" and have one interior pocket.
The black velvet of this bag was once a skirt that I found a new use for. Silk dupioni, decorative stitching and a beaded tassel added to the beauty of the velvet.
I tried a new technique on this bag. Two pieces of fabric were cut on the curves and then woven together. Decorative stitching was used on the edges of the woven strips. The lighter color fabric was enhanced with the floral stamp which was also free-motion stitched to emphasize the design. Beads were added as well.
This design was created by cutting curved pieces of batiks and stitching them to the base fabric with a variety of decorative stitch designs. The customer who purchased this bag took it on a trip to Italy. I was told it made quite a hit wherever she went.
